Which victory in the Pacific gave the U.S. forces a strategic location from which to begin moving one island a?

It all started after the Battle of Midway, after that Admiral Nimitz took the Marines to Guadalc. MacArthur & Nimitz engaged in island-hopping in order to take over select islands forcing the Japanese to depart elsewhere so that our bombers would be in range of the remaining islands & the main islands of Japan.
