Is Gastric byp surgery really that dangerous anymore?

Yes. Gastric byp surgery carries the highest risk of any elective surgery. Complications are over 90%, fatality is around 3% They try to say less, but they only talk about the 3 weeks following surgery. At six months out it rises dramatically. In addition, very few gastric byp patients actually get to a normal weight. The goal in fact, a successful surgery... is considered when you lose half of the weight you need to lose and keep it off.
