How would you distinguish the structure of cardiac muscle from that of skeletal muscle?

Cardiac muscle has intercalated discs and skeletal muscle does not. These discs allow for the interconnection of the cardiac muscle required to harmonize them in a rhythmic heart beat. These connections also tend to make cardiac muscle branched in appearance versus the more linear appearance of skeletal muscle.
